Each cabinet in a communication equipment room serves a specific role in organizing, protecting, and distributing network and telecommunication equipment.

Main Equipment Room (MER) Cabinets

The MER acts as the primary hub for a building's IT and telecommunications infrastructure. Cabinets in the MER typically house:

  • Backbone cabling panels for fiber optic and copper connections entering the building.
  • Telecommunication equipment such as telephone exchanges, routers, core switches, and firewalls.
  • Power protection systems, including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to maintain uptime during outages.
  • Data storage servers if on-premises storage is used.
  • These cabinets serve as the central distribution point, connecting all other equipment rooms and ensuring high-quality backbone connectivity across the building .

Satellite Equipment Room (SER) Cabinets

SER cabinets function as secondary hubs, often located near specific departments or areas of the building. Their roles include:

  • Housing network switches and patch panels that connect local devices to the MER.
  • Acting as intermediate distribution points, reducing cable lengths and improving network performance.
  • Supporting department-specific IT needs while remaining connected to the MER for backbone access.
  • Multiple SERs can exist in a building, each linked to the MER to maintain consistent network quality .

Departmental Equipment Room (DER) Cabinets

DER cabinets are smaller, often floor-specific enclosures used for localized connectivity. Their functions include:

  • Connecting floor-level or departmental devices such as computers, printers, and access points.
  • Housing small switches or panels to manage local network traffic.
  • Providing secure, lockable enclosures for departmental equipment without requiring full room infrastructure like cooling or large UPS systems.
  • Acting as a last-mile distribution point, linking end-user devices to the SER or MER .

General Functions of All Cabinets

Across all types of cabinets, common functions include:

  • Organization: Structuring equipment and cabling for easy maintenance and upgrades .
  • Protection: Shielding sensitive electronics from dust, moisture, and unauthorized access .
  • Cooling: Maintaining proper airflow and temperature to ensure optimal equipment performance .
  • Connectivity Management: Facilitating structured cabling and network distribution throughout the building . By understanding these roles, each cabinet type ensures that the building's network infrastructure is efficient, secure, and scalable, supporting both current and future IT needs.
