Overview

Digital fiber optic communication systems use light to carry digital information (binary 1s and 0s) over optical fibers, replacing traditional electrical signals with optical signals for superior speed and bandwidth . These systems are widely used in telecommunications, internet backbones, cable television, and data centers due to their ability to transmit large volumes of data over long distances with minimal loss and immunity to electromagnetic interference .

Key Components

  1. Optical Transmitter: Converts electrical digital signals into light pulses. Common light sources include laser diodes (LDs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Laser diodes produce coherent light suitable for long-distance, high-speed transmission, while LEDs emit incoherent light with a broader spectrum, limiting distance and bit rate .
  2. Optical Fiber: The transmission medium, typically made of glass or plastic, consisting of:
    • Core: Central region where light propagates.
    • Cladding: Surrounds the core and ensures total internal reflection, keeping light confined.

  4. Optical Receiver: Converts incoming light pulses back into electrical signals. Photodiodes are commonly used to detect light intensity and reconstruct the original digital data .

Working Principle

Digital data from a computer or telecom device is first converted into electrical signals. The transmitter modulates these signals into light pulses, which travel through the optical fiber via total internal reflection. At the receiving end, the optical receiver detects the light pulses and converts them back into electrical signals for further processing . This process allows for high-speed transmission with minimal signal degradation.
