Bridge construction generally involves three interdependent stages: foundation, substructure, and superstructure. The foundation is designed based on geotechnical studies and may include open, pile, or well foundations depending on soil conditions and load requirements. The substructure, including piers and abutments, transfers loads from the superstructure to the foundation. The superstructure, which carries traffic loads, can be constructed using various methods depending on span length, site accessibility, and design complexity .

Major Construction Techniques

1. Cast-In-Situ (Cast-In-Place) Method Concrete is poured directly at the construction site into pre-prepared molds or shuttering. This method is highly flexible, allowing for complex geometries, curved decks, or irregular shapes. It is ideal when transporting large prefabricated elements is difficult or when site access is limited. The substructure is completed first, followed by shuttering installation and concrete casting for the deck . 2. Precast Method Precast elements, such as beams or segments, are manufactured offsite in controlled environments and transported to the site. They are then placed on piers and abutments using cranes. This method ensures high-quality production, reduces construction time, and is efficient for repetitive or modular designs. Precast segments can be used in combination with prestressed concrete for added strength . 3. Balanced Cantilever Method Used for medium to long spans (50–250 meters), this technique constructs the bridge in segments extending alternately from piers. It maintains balance throughout construction and is suitable for difficult-to-access sites or irregular spans. Both cast-in-situ and precast segments can be employed in this method . 4. Beam and Girder Method Horizontal beams supported by piers form the deck. This method is simple and effective for short to medium spans and is commonly used for highway overpasses and small river crossings . 5. Arch Construction Arches transfer loads through compression along a curved profile. This method is suitable for medium spans, especially in mountainous or valley regions, and provides both structural strength and aesthetic appeal . 6. Suspension and Cable-Stayed Methods Suspension bridges use main cables anchored at both ends, with vertical suspenders supporting the deck. Cable-stayed bridges connect the deck directly to towers via cables. Both methods are ideal for long spans and iconic urban crossings, offering flexibility and elegance .

Factors Influencing Method Selection

  • Span length and geometry: Longer spans often require cantilever, suspension, or cable-stayed methods.
  • Site conditions: Difficult terrain, rivers, or limited access may favor cast-in-situ or cantilever techniques.
  • Material availability: Concrete, steel, or prestressed elements influence method choice.
  • Construction timeline and cost: Precast methods reduce on-site time, while cast-in-situ may lower transportation costs.
