How to use the automatic light tracking module - MADIBA BAY OPTICS

Page Content

An automatic light tracking module uses light sensors and servo motors to detect and follow a light source, adjusting its position in real time for optimal alignment.

Hardware Setup

  1. Sensors: Most modules use photoresistors (LDRs) to detect light intensity. Some advanced setups use four LDRs arranged in quadrants to determine the strongest light direction .
  2. Servo Motors: Connect the servo motor(s) to the microcontroller to allow movement along one or two axes. For single-axis tracking, one servo is sufficient; for dual-axis tracking, use two servos .
  3. Wiring:
    • Connect the LDRs to analog input pins on the microcontroller (e.g., A0 for Arduino) with a pull-down resistor to stabilize readings .
    • Connect servo power (5V) and ground to the microcontroller, and the control wire to a PWM-capable pin (e.g., pin 9 on Arduino), .
    • Ensure all connections are secure to prevent disconnections during movement.

Software and Programming

  1. Reading Sensor Values: Continuously read analog values from the LDRs. For multi-sensor setups, calculate the average intensity for each axis (top vs bottom, left vs right) to determine the direction of the light .
  2. Control Logic:
    • Compare sensor readings to determine which direction the servo should move.
    • Use a tolerance threshold to prevent unnecessary servo movement when light differences are minimal .
    • Update servo positions gradually to track the light smoothly.
  3. Calibration: Some modules, like the ESP32 Light Tracker, include automatic LDR calibration at startup to ensure accurate readings .
  4. Optional Features:
    • Manual control via Bluetooth for testing or override.
    • Panic mode to move servos to a safe position if sensors fail .
    • Diagnostic mode to print sensor values and servo angles for troubleshooting .

Practical Tips

  • Ensure the servo has enough torque to move the sensor assembly smoothly.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on the microcontroller to prevent overheating.
  • Test the system in a controlled environment before deploying outdoors.
  • Adjust the tolerance variable to balance responsiveness and stability . By following these steps, your automatic light tracking module will detect the brightest light source and adjust its position in real time, making it suitable for solar panels, robotic eyes, or interactive projects .
