An OPPC (Optical Phase Conductor) cable integrates optical fiber units within the phase conductor, combining power transmission and optical communication in a single cable.

Basic Structure

An OPPC cable typically consists of the following layers and components:

  • Optical Units (OUs): Plastic-pipe optical fibers are embedded within the conductor to transmit optical signals while the cable carries electrical current .

  • Leading-Out Pipe: A multi-chamber pipe guides the optical fiber from the cable to the connector.
  • Insulating Sealing Assembly: Includes a spherical sealing washer, insulating sheath, reinforcing sleeve, and tightening nut to protect the fiber and maintain insulation .

Installation Considerations

  • OPPC cables are energized along high-voltage lines, unlike OPGW, so special insulators and splice boxes are required .
  • Tension stringing method is used to maintain constant tension during installation, with careful control of sag and straining to avoid fiber damage .
  • The cable can replace one phase conductor in a three-phase line, supporting both power and communication functions .
