Standard 12-Color Sequence

For single-mode and multimode fibers, the TIA-598-C standard defines the following 12-color sequence for individual fibers within a cable or buffer tube:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua This sequence repeats for cables with more than 12 fibers, often with a colored stripe or binder to distinguish the next group of 12 fibers, ensuring each fiber remains uniquely identifiable in high-count cables (e.g., 24, 48, 144 fibers) .

Buffer Tubes and High-Count Cables

In multi-fiber cables, fibers are grouped into buffer tubes (also called sub-units), each containing 12 fibers. The tube itself may have a color to indicate its position in the cable, and the fibers inside follow the standard 12-color sequence. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, the third tube might be green, and the 10th fiber inside that tube would be violet .

Splice Tray Practices

When splicing fibers, technicians match the color-coded fibers from the incoming cable to the corresponding pigtail or outgoing cable. This ensures proper continuity and prevents miswiring.
