Standard 12-Color Sequence

The TIA/EIA-598-C standard specifies a 12-color sequence for identifying individual fibers in optical cables, which is widely adopted in North America and internationally for consistency and safety. The sequence is:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue) This sequence applies to loose-tube, ribbon, and tight-buffered cables, ensuring that each fiber can be quickly and accurately identified during installation, splicing, or maintenance .

Cables with More Than 12 Fibers

For cables exceeding 12 fibers, the color sequence repeats in groups of 12, with additional markings to maintain unique identification:

  • Loose-tube cables: Each tube contains up to 12 fibers following the standard sequence. Tubes themselves are color-coded using the same 12-color order. If the fiber count exceeds 12 tubes, stripes or binders (such as black stripes) are added to distinguish repeated sets .
  • Ribbon cables: Each ribbon layer follows the 12-color sequence. For multiple ribbons, the sequence repeats for each layer, allowing easy identification in high-fiber-count cables .
  • Special cases: For 16-fiber MPO connectors, fibers 13–16 are often assigned Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime, following certain European or high-density standards .

Practical Applications

  • Indoor tight-buffered cables: Typically 6, 12, or 24 fibers, using the standard 12-color sequence for each fiber.
  • Outdoor loose-tube cables: Multiple tubes, each with fibers following the 12-color sequence, and tubes themselves color-coded.
