Overview

A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed for field fusion splicing to an existing fiber cable . This method combines the optical quality of factory-polished connectors with the flexibility of field installation, making it ideal for terminating outside plant fibers to indoor networks or patch panels .

Equipment and Alignment

Modern fusion splicers are compact, portable, and often operated by a single technician. They use either core alignment or clad alignment techniques to precisely align fibers before fusing . Core alignment is preferred for single-mode fibers due to their small 8 µm core, ensuring minimal insertion loss, typically below 0.05 dB . Clad alignment can be used for pigtail splicing but may be less effective with modern fibers of differing generations .

Splicing Procedure

  1. Fiber Preparation: Strip the protective coating from both the existing fiber and the pigtail, clean the bare fibers with alcohol, and cleave them to produce flat, perpendicular end faces .
  2. Splice Alignment: Place the fibers in the fusion splicer's v-grooves. The splicer uses cameras and electrodes to align the fibers precisely along the x- and y-axes .
  3. Fusion: The splicer applies an electric arc to melt and fuse the fiber ends, forming a continuous optical path.
  4. Protection: Apply a heat-shrink splice protector to reinforce the joint and provide strain relief .
  5. Testing: Modern splicers often include a pull test and loss estimation, reducing the need for continuous OTDR testing during installation .
