To disassemble an adjustable or step attenuator, carefully remove the external covers, screws, and plungers to access the internal attenuator pads and contacts.

Step-by-Step Disassembly

1. Prepare the Work Area Ensure a clean, static-free workspace. Use grounding precautions to prevent electrostatic discharge, which can damage sensitive components in some attenuators . 2. Remove External Connectors and Nameplates

  • Loosen the nuts on SMA or other connectors.
  • Remove the nameplate to expose the underlying screws . 3. Remove Top and Side Panels
  • Identify and remove Allen screws on the top and side panels. Note that screws near connectors may be shorter than others.
  • Carefully remove sideplates, taking care not to lose any wire mesh or small components . 4. Slide Out the Cover
  • Slide out the U-shaped or top cover to separate the attenuator into two main parts: the top containing the attenuator pads and the bottom containing solenoids or mechanical actuators . 5. Remove Plungers and Contacts
  • Use a needle or pointed tool to gently push the tip of each plunger over and down until it is free from the contact.
  • Inspect O-rings on plungers; missing or deteriorated O-rings are a common failure point . 6. Inspect and Test Internal Components
  • Measure the attenuator pads with a digital multimeter; most pads should read around 50 ohms to ground, except the 10 dB pad, which may measure higher.
  • Check for cracks, oxidation, or other damage on pads and contacts . 7. Cleaning and Maintenance
  • Clean contacts and pads with appropriate tools to remove oxidation or debris.
  • Ensure all components are dry and free of contaminants before reassembly . 8. Reassembly
  • Reverse the disassembly steps carefully. Align plungers with mounting holes, replace covers, side panels, and screws, and secure connectors.
  • Test the attenuator with a signal generator and power meter to verify proper operation before returning it to service . Following these steps allows safe access to the internal components of an adjustable attenuator for inspection, cleaning, or minor repairs without damaging the device.
