You can view Fibre Channel switch ports and their associated WWNs using either the switch's graphical interface or CLI commands, which display port status, speed, and connected device information.

Using a Graphical Interface

Most Fibre Channel switches provide a graphical or table view of ports:

  • Navigate to the Fibre Channel switch tile in the management interface.
  • Click Ports to display all ports in either Table or Graph view.
  • Each port entry typically shows:
    • Port ID and status (online/offline)
    • Speed (automatic negotiation or fixed Gbps)
    • Connected device WWN (World Wide Name of initiators or targets)
    • Connected host IP and controller port ID
    • Storage serial number and subscriber ID if applicable
  • Clicking a port provides detailed information about the connected device and its WWN .

Using CLI Commands (Cisco Example)

For Cisco MDS or Nexus switches, you can use show commands to retrieve port and WWN information:

  • show interface fcX/Y – Displays operational state, speed, and optical module details.
  • show flogi database – Lists logged-in Fibre Channel devices with WWPN (World Wide Port Name) and WWNN (World Wide Node Name) .
  • show zone or show vsan – Displays zoning information and ports associated with each VSAN.
  • show fabric binding – Shows registered WWPNs and their associated FCIDs .
  • show device-alias – Displays device aliases mapped to WWNs for easier identification .

Understanding WWN Formats

  • WWN is a 16-digit hexadecimal identifier (e.g., xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx).
  • Some interfaces allow nicknames for WWNs, which replace the raw WWN in the display for easier recognition .
  • WWNs are used for port binding, zoning, and fabric management, ensuring persistent identification of devices across the network .

Best Practices

  • Verify that all ports are online and connected devices are recognized.
  • Use port-level monitoring to check for errors or throughput issues.
  • Maintain a WWN inventory for all connected hosts and storage systems to simplify zoning and troubleshooting.
  • For maintenance, you can block/unblock ports and clean fiber-optic connectors without disrupting the entire fabric .

By combining graphical views and CLI commands, administrators can efficiently monitor, manage, and troubleshoot Fibre Channel switch ports and their WWNs, ensuring proper connectivity and fabric integrity.
