1. Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) The TOSA is responsible for converting electrical signals into optical signals. It contains a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) as the light source, an optical interface, a monitoring photodiode, and a housing with an electrical interface. The driver chip processes the input electrical signal and modulates the laser or LED to emit light at the required data rate. An Automatic Power Control (APC) circuit ensures stable optical output power during operation . 2. Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) The ROSA converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. It includes a photodetector (PIN photodiode or avalanche photodiode, APD), a Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA), and a Post Amplifier. APDs provide higher sensitivity by amplifying the photocurrent through avalanche multiplication. The TIA converts the weak photocurrent into a voltage signal, which is then digitized by the post amplifier for further processing . 3. Optical Modulator The modulator encodes electrical data onto the optical carrier. It can be direct modulation, where the laser current is varied, or external modulation, using devices like Mach–Zehnder Modulators or Electro-Absorption Modulators to precisely control light intensity, phase, or polarization . 4. Photodiode Photodiodes detect incoming light and convert it into electrical signals. They are critical for receiver sensitivity and overall module performance. APDs are preferred for high-speed or long-distance applications due to their higher gain . 5. Driver and Amplifier Circuits Driver circuits control the laser diode or LED, while preamplifiers and post amplifiers in the receiver ensure the electrical signal is strong enough for processing. These circuits are essential for maintaining signal integrity and minimizing bit errors . 6. Optical and Electrical Interfaces Optical modules have an optical interface connecting to fiber cables and an electrical interface connecting to the host system. The form factor and interface standards are often defined by Multi-Source Agreements (MSAs), ensuring interoperability across devices .
