Optical fiber cables transmit data as pulses of light through a core surrounded by cladding, using total internal reflection. They are classified into single-mode (SMF) and multimode (MMF) fibers based on how light propagates through the core .

  • Single-mode fiber: Core diameter is typically 8–10 µm, allowing a single light path. This ensures minimal signal loss and high integrity over distances up to 100 km or more .
  • Multimode fiber: Core diameter ranges from 50 µm to 62.5 µm, supporting multiple light paths. This makes it easier to couple light from inexpensive sources but limits effective transmission distance to up to 400 meters for high-speed applications .
