A jump fiber (fiber optic jumper) is not the same as a tail fiber (pigtail); the main difference is that a jumper has connectors on both ends, while a tail fiber has a connector on only one end.

Structure and Connectors

  • Jump Fiber (Fiber Optic Jumper): A short optical fiber cable with connectors on both ends, which can be the same type or different types. It is used to connect devices, such as switches, routers, or optical distribution frames, and can be cut into shorter lengths to function as tail fibers if needed .
  • Tail Fiber (Pigtail): A fiber optic cable with a connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. The bare end is typically fusion-spliced to another fiber in a terminal box or distribution frame. Tail fibers are often used for permanent connections in optical networks .

Applications

  • Jump Fiber: Used for flexible, active connections between network devices, including inter-device connections, work area subsystems, and patching in data centers or telecom rooms. It provides easy management and reconfiguration of network links .
  • Tail Fiber: Used to connect optical cables to jumpers or equipment in a fixed installation. It is commonly found in optical fiber terminal boxes and distribution frames, where it is spliced to other fibers to complete the network path .
