Optical Modules

An optical module is primarily a transceiver that converts electrical signals from a device into optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables, and vice versa. Standard optical modules connect to fiber cables and are not directly compatible with copper cabling for signal transmission .

Copper SFP Modules

Some SFP or SFP+ modules are specifically designed with RJ45 interfaces to support copper Ethernet cables. These modules allow network devices with optical ports to transmit electrical signals over existing copper cabling, such as Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A, without replacing the infrastructure . The copper in these modules carries electrical signals rather than light, making them suitable for short-distance connections and legacy network setups.

Direct Attach Copper (DAC) and Active Copper Cables (ACC)
