Equipment Needed

  • Optical power meter to measure received optical power.
  • Optical light source of the appropriate wavelength (splitters may be wavelength-dependent).
  • Launch reference cables to connect the light source and power meter to the splitter.
  • Optional: CertiFiber® Pro OLTS for automated testing and inspection of connectors.

Step-by-Step Testing Procedure

1. Prepare the Test Setup

  • Connect a launch reference cable to the optical light source.
  • Calibrate the power meter using the launch cable to set a 0 dB reference.
  • Inspect all fiber connectors to avoid contamination or damage, especially if using automated tools like CertiFiber Pro with a USB camera option .

2. Test a 1x2 Splitter

  • Connect the light source to the input port of the splitter.
  • Attach a receive launch cable to the first output port and measure the optical power with the meter.
  • Record the insertion loss, which includes the split ratio loss, excess loss from manufacturing, and connector losses .
  • Move the receive cable to the second output port and repeat the measurement.
  • Reverse the direction to test upstream loss if needed.

3. Test 1xN Splitters (e.g., 1x32)

  • Connect the light source to the single input port.
  • Measure each output port individually using the power meter and reference cable.
  • For upstream testing, reverse the direction and repeat for each output port.

4. Test 2xN Splitters

  • Test from each input port to all output ports.
  • Record all measurements carefully, as multiple input/output combinations increase the data volume .

5. Using Automated Test Equipment

  • Devices like the CertiFiber Pro OLTS can automate testing, including loopback mode for balanced PON splitters.
  • Set the correct test limits according to ANSI/TIA or ISO/IEC standards.
  • Inspect connectors using the built-in camera to ensure accurate results and prevent damage .
