Role of Optical Splitters in PON

In a Passive Optical Network (PON), the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office sends optical signals downstream to multiple subscribers. Optical splitters are passive devices that divide this signal into multiple outputs, allowing a single OLT port to serve many ONUs or ONTs without requiring dedicated fibers for each user . This reduces infrastructure costs, simplifies network expansion, and requires no power or active maintenance .

Splitter Types and Ratios

Two main types of splitters are used:

  • FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) Splitters: Low-cost, suitable for small splits like 1:2 or 1:4.
  • PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) Splitters: Provide uniform signal distribution, ideal for larger splits such as 1:32 or 1:64 . Split ratios determine how the optical power is divided.   • Distributed (Cascaded) Splitting: Smaller splitters are placed sequentially (e.g., 1:8 in the feeder cable, followed by 1:4 near the curb). This approach reduces initial investment, improves distance coverage, and allows easier future expansion, though troubleshooting is more complex .

ONU vs. ONT Placement

  • ONT (Optical Network Terminal): Located at the customer premises, typically serving a single subscriber.
  • ONU (Optical Network Unit): Can serve multiple subscribers, often installed in a building basement or street cabinet . The splitter connects the OLT to ONUs/ONTs through the Optical Distribution Network (ODN), which may include primary and secondary splitting stages. Primary splitting is often used in dense urban areas, while secondary splitting is common in rural or wide-area deployments .

Practical Considerations

  • Power Budget: Each splitter and fiber segment introduces optical loss. Network designers must calculate the total loss to ensure ONUs/ONTs receive sufficient signal strength .
  • Scalability: Adding new subscribers is straightforward if splitter outputs are available, making PON networks highly scalable .
  • Maintenance: Passive splitters require minimal maintenance, reducing operational costs .
