Single-mode fiber (SMF) and multimode fiber (MMF) have different core diameters—SMF is about 9µm, while MMF is 50–62.5µm—and different light propagation modes. Directly connecting them causes severe signal loss, modal dispersion, and unstable communication, making the link unreliable or unusable .
