In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, so no electrical wiring is needed at the sensing location. The light traveling through the fiber is modulated by environmental changes such as strain, temperature, or pressure, and the modulated light is sent to a detector for analysis . This makes intrinsic fiber optic sensors ideal for environments with high voltage, flammable materials, or strong electromagnetic interference, as they do not conduct electricity .

Electrical Wiring for Extrinsic Sensors

In extrinsic fiber optic sensors, the fiber transmits light to and from an external transducer. While the sensing element may require electrical power, the fiber itself carries the optical signal. Electrical wiring is typically limited to powering the transducer or connecting the detector and signal processing electronics. For example, a platinum resistance thermometer used with an extrinsic sensor converts temperature changes into electrical signals, which are then injected into the optical fiber via a transmitter . This setup requires low-voltage power cables to the transducer but keeps the sensing area electrically isolated.

Connector and Cabling Considerations
