How to peel off a dual-core optical cable - MADIBA BAY OPTICS

Page Content

Use a fiber optic cable stripper and careful handling to remove the outer sheath and coatings, exposing the dual-core fibers safely.

Tools Needed

  • Fiber optic cable stripper (for outer sheath and inner coatings)
  • Fiber cleaver (for precise end-face cutting)
  • Cable cutting scissors (for aramid yarn and sheath trimming)
  • Cotton ball or dust-free cloth with alcohol (for cleaning)
  • Needle-nose pliers (optional, for small debris removal)

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Measure and Mark the Strip Length Determine the length of cable to strip, typically 50–100 cm for handling and splicing purposes .
  2. Remove the Outer Sheath Use a cable stripper to cut around the outer plastic layer of the dual-core cable. Adjust the blade depth to avoid cutting the inner fibers. Rotate the tool in a spiral pattern to loosen the sheath, then pull it off along the cable axis .
  3. Cut and Remove Aramid Yarn Inside the sheath, you will find aramid yarn (Kevlar fibers). Cut these with cable scissors and remove them carefully to prevent fiber damage .
  4. Strip the Inner Coating Use the fiber optic stripper to remove the primary and secondary coatings of each fiber core. Hold the fiber perpendicular to the tool, gently squeeze the jaws, and slide the coating off along the fiber axis. The stripping length for the bare fiber is usually 3–5 cm .
  5. Clean the Bare Fiber Inspect the exposed fiber for debris. Use a cotton ball or dust-free cloth with alcohol to wipe the fiber clean, ensuring no contamination before splicing or connectorization .
  6. Prepare for Splicing or Termination If splicing, insert a fiber protection sleeve before stripping the fiber end-face. Use a fiber cleaver to cut the fiber precisely at the end-face, ready for fusion or mechanical splicing .

Tips and Precautions

  • Always handle fibers carefully; bare fibers are fragile and can break easily.
  • Avoid touching the stripped fiber with bare hands to prevent contamination.
  • Use proper eye protection when cutting or stripping fibers.
  • Ensure the stripping tool is correctly adjusted for the cable diameter to prevent nicking the fiber . Following these steps ensures a clean, safe, and efficient peeling of a dual-core optical cable, ready for splicing or connector installation.
