Purpose of Fiber Color Coding

Fiber optic color coding is essential for organizing and identifying individual fibers within a cable, facilitating installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. By using a standardized color system, technicians can quickly locate specific fibers, reduce errors during splicing or testing, and maintain continuity in complex networks, especially in high-density or multi-fiber installations ( ).

TIA-598-C Standard

The TIA-598-C standard defines the color coding for optical fibers, buffer tubes, and cable jackets. It ensures consistent identification across manufacturers and installations ( ). The standard specifies a 12-color sequence for individual fibers:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats in additional buffer tubes, allowing unique identification of each fiber. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, the first 12 fibers are in the first tube, the next 12 in the second tube, and so on, with each tube also color-coded ( ).

High-Count and MPO Cables

In high-count cables (e.g., 48, 96, 144 fibers), a tube-and-fiber system is used. Each buffer tube has a color from the 12-color sequence, and fibers inside the tube follow the same sequence. For instance, Fiber #34 would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) ( ). For 16-fiber MPO connectors, additional colors like Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime are used in some European standards ( ).

Outer Jacket and Connector Colors

Outer jacket colors indicate fiber type and mode:

  • Yellow: Single-mode (OS2)
  • Orange: Multi-mode (OM1/OM2)
  • Aqua: Multi-mode (OM3/OM4)
  • Emerald Green: OM5 Connector boots also use color coding to indicate polish type: blue for UPC and green for APC ( ).
