A Cisco optical module may not be recognized due to compatibility issues, unsupported third-party SFPs, incorrect fiber type, or interface errors.

Verify Compatibility

Ensure the SFP module is Cisco-approved for your switch model. Using non-Cisco or unsupported third-party modules can cause the switch to reject the transceiver or place the port into an errdisable state (%PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: gbic-invalid) . Check the Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix or run the command:

show interface transceiver supported-list

to confirm the module is supported .

Check Interface and Module Status

Use CLI commands to verify whether the switch detects the SFP:

show interface show idprom interface show interface capabilities

These commands display interface status, transceiver type, speed, duplex, and connector type . If the interface shows notconnect, the issue may be with the SFP, fiber cable, or remote device .

Inspect Fiber Type and Cabling

  • Multimode SFPs require multimode fiber (OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4, 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm)
  • Single-mode SFPs require single-mode fiber (9 µm core) Mismatched fiber types can prevent the link from coming up, even if the SFP is recognized . Also, check TX/RX polarity and ensure the fiber connectors are properly seated.

Optical Power and Diagnostics

Check the Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM/DDM) data for transmit and receive power, temperature, and voltage. Low received optical power or exceeding module sensitivity thresholds can cause recognition or link issues . Use a handheld optical power meter if needed.

Common Error Messages and Recovery

  • Unsupported transceiver: The module is not on the approved list; verify part number and consider enabling unsupported transceivers with caution (service unsupported-transceiver on Cisco) .
  • Errdisable state: Use shutdown/no shutdown on the interface, reseat the module, or test in a known-good port .

Additional Tips

  • Ensure both ends of the link support the same speed and duplex settings .
  • Verify the SFP's polish type (UPC/APC) matches the fiber to avoid excessive back reflection .
  • Update the switch IOS/XE version if the SFP requires a minimum software version for recognition . By systematically checking compatibility, interface status, fiber type, optical power, and error messages, most recognition issues with Cisco optical modules can be resolved efficiently.
