Different VLANs can communicate with a core switch if inter-VLAN routing is enabled, typically using a Layer 3 switch or router.

VLAN Basics

A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) segments a network at Layer 2, creating separate broadcast domains. Devices within the same VLAN can communicate directly, but devices on different VLANs cannot communicate at Layer 2 alone because VLANs isolate traffic to maintain separation and security .

Role of the Core Switch

A core switch often operates at Layer 3, meaning it can perform routing between VLANs. To enable communication between VLANs:

  1. Trunk Links: Access and distribution switches connect to the core switch using trunk ports, which carry traffic for multiple VLANs simultaneously .
  2. SVIs (Switched Virtual Interfaces): Each VLAN on the core switch must have an SVI configured with an IP address. These SVIs act as default gateways for devices in their respective VLANs .
  3. Routing: The core switch must have IP routing enabled. This allows it to route packets between VLANs, effectively enabling devices in VLAN 10 to communicate with devices in VLAN 20 .

Practical Configuration Steps

  1. Create VLANs on the core switch using the vlan vlan-id command.
  2. Configure SVIs for each VLAN with interface vlan vlan-id and assign an IP address.
  3. Enable IP routing globally with ip routing.
  4. Connect access ports to end devices and assign them to the correct VLAN.
  5. Use trunk ports to connect distribution or access switches to the core switch, ensuring all VLANs are allowed on the trunk.

Key Considerations

  • VLANs must have distinct IP subnets; sharing the same subnet across VLANs can cause routing issues .
  • The native VLAN on a trunk should be carefully managed to avoid unintentional bridging between VLANs .
  • Layer 2 switches alone cannot route between VLANs; a Layer 3 device is required for inter-VLAN communication . By following these steps, a core switch can facilitate communication between multiple VLANs while maintaining logical separation and efficient traffic management.
