What is a Fiber Optic Pigtail?

A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber, typically 0.5 to 2 meters, with a factory-installed connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. The connector end is polished and tested under factory conditions to ensure low insertion loss and high return loss, while the bare fiber end is designed for fusion or mechanical splicing to the main fiber cable in the field. This allows for fast, reliable, and cost-effective terminations in Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs), terminal boxes, or patch panels .

Pigtail vs. Patch Cord

While pigtails and patch cords may look similar, they serve different purposes:

  • Pigtail: Connector on one end, bare fiber on the other; used for splicing into bulk fiber cables.
  • Patch Cord: Connectors on both ends; used to connect two already-terminated devices or equipment . Patch cords can even be cut in half to create two pigtails, but pigtails are specifically designed for field splicing and permanent connections.

Types of Fiber Optic Pigtails

Fiber optic pigtails are classified by fiber type and connector type:

  • Fiber Type:
    • Single-mode (OS2): Yellow jacket, suitable for long-distance, high-performance networks.
    • Multimode (OM3/OM4): Orange or aqua jacket, suitable for shorter distances and high-speed data centers .

Splicing Methods

The bare fiber end of a pigtail is joined to the main fiber cable using:

  • Mechanical Splicing: Temporary or semi-permanent connection using alignment fixtures and index-matching gel . Fusion splicing is preferred for high-performance networks due to lower signal loss and higher reliability.
