Relay protection and control devices are used to detect abnormal conditions in electrical systems and automatically isolate faults to protect equipment, ensure safety, and maintain system reliability.

Purpose and Function

Relay protection and control devices are critical components in electrical power systems designed to monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and phase angle. They detect abnormal conditions like short circuits, overloads, voltage imbalances, or equipment malfunctions and initiate corrective actions, typically by tripping circuit breakers to isolate the affected section from the rest of the system . This prevents damage to transformers, generators, transmission lines, and other equipment while maintaining continuous power supply .

How They Work

Protective relays operate by continuously monitoring electrical parameters. When a parameter exceeds a predefined threshold (pickup value), the relay activates its mechanism to close contacts, which completes the trip circuit of a circuit breaker, causing it to disconnect the faulty section . Once the abnormal condition is cleared and the parameter falls below the reset value, the relay returns to its normal state. Modern relays can also record events, analyze faults, and allow remote monitoring and control .

Types of Relays

Relays are categorized based on their mechanism (electromechanical, static, or digital/numerical) and function (overcurrent, undervoltage, distance, differential, or time-based relays), . Advanced multifunctional relays integrate multiple protection functions and are programmable for complex power system requirements .
