To connect a dual-optical module to a switch, insert the SFP/SFP+ module into the switch port, connect the corresponding fiber cables to the module, and ensure compatibility in fiber type, wavelength, and duplex mode.

Step-by-Step Connection

  1. Check Compatibility Ensure the dual-optical module matches the switch port type (SFP or SFP+), fiber mode (single-mode or multi-mode), and wavelength (e.g., 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm) to avoid signal loss or incompatibility issues . Verify that the module supports the required transmission distance and port speed.
  2. Insert the Module Remove the dust cap from the SFP/SFP+ module and the switch port. Carefully insert the module into the switch's optical slot until it clicks into place. These modules are hot-swappable, so the switch does not need to be powered down .
  3. Connect Fiber Cables
    • For dual-fiber modules, connect the transmit (TX) fiber from the module to the receive (RX) fiber on the other device, and vice versa.
    • Use pre-terminated fiber cables with LC or SC connectors for easier installation and reduced signal loss .
    • Ensure the fiber strands are not bent sharply to prevent attenuation.
  4. Cascading or Linking Switches If connecting two switches, ensure both modules are dual-fiber and of the same mode. If one switch uses single-fiber and the other dual-fiber, a media converter may be required to bridge the connection .
  5. Optional Media Converter If the other device lacks an SFP slot, use a media converter: insert the SFP module into the converter, connect the fiber cable, and link the converter to the switch via Ethernet patch cord. Both converters require external power .
  6. Verify Connection After connecting, check the optical module status via the switch CLI or management interface. Commands like show fiber-ports-optical-transceiver on Cisco switches display link status, signal strength, and errors . Ensure the link is active and error-free.

Tips for Reliable Operation

  • Keep fiber connectors clean and free of dust.
  • Match fiber type and wavelength on both ends.
  • Avoid exceeding the module's maximum transmission distance.
  • Use proper cable management to prevent stress on the fibers. Following these steps ensures a stable and high-performance optical connection between your dual-optical module and the switch.
