Understanding Cable Structure

Optical cables typically consist of multiple layers: the outer jacket, strength members (like aramid yarn), buffer coating, cladding, and the core. Each layer serves a protective or structural function, and improper handling can compromise the fiber's integrity, leading to signal loss or connection failure . Single-mode and multi-mode fibers may have different coating thicknesses, which affects stripping techniques .

Stripping Techniques

  1. Prepare the Work Area: Ensure a clean, well-lit workspace free from dust and debris. Lay out all tools within easy reach .
  2. Layer-by-Layer Stripping:
    • Outer Jacket: Use a wire or fiber optic jacket stripper to remove the outer sheath without nicking the underlying layers .
    • Strength Members: Carefully cut or pull away aramid yarns, ensuring the fiber remains undamaged .
    • Buffer Coating: Use a precision fiber optic stripper to remove the buffer and acrylate coatings down to the glass cladding (typically 125 µm) without scratching or nicking the fiber .
  3. Tool Selection: Use professional-grade optical fiber strippers, which may be mechanical, thermal, or non-contact, depending on the fiber type and coating . Avoid generic wire strippers, as they can create micro-cracks that weaken the fiber .
  4. Cleaning: After stripping, clean the exposed fiber with alcohol wipes or a suitable cleaning solution to remove debris and residue .

Fixing and Preparing Fiber Ends

  1. Cleaving: Use a fiber optic cleaver to create a clean, perpendicular end face. Proper cleaving ensures minimal signal loss and optimal connector or splice performance .
  2. Inspection: Examine the cleaved fiber with a microscope or visual fault locator (VFL) to confirm the end face is smooth and defect-free .
  3. Termination or Splicing: Once stripped and cleaved, the fiber can be terminated with connectors or fusion-spliced. Repeat the stripping and cleaning process for each fiber individually to maintain consistency .
