Use optical modules with fiber jumpers for switch stacking when the distance between switches exceeds 30 meters, ensuring high-speed, reliable connections.

Choosing the Right Connection Type

When stacking switches, the type of cabling depends on the distance between devices:

  • DAC (Direct Attach Copper): Best for distances under 7 meters. It is cost-effective, low-power, and uses copper cables with fixed modules at both ends, but is susceptible to electromagnetic interference .
  • AOC (Active Optical Cable): Suitable for distances 7–30 meters. It integrates optical modules and a fixed-length fiber cable, providing optical transmission with lower cost than separate modules and jumpers. However, if one module fails, the entire AOC must be replaced .
  • Optical Modules + Fiber Jumpers: Recommended for distances over 30 meters. This setup allows flexibility, as individual modules can be replaced if needed, and supports longer distances with high reliability .

Best Practices for Optical Stack Connections

  1. Select Compatible Switch Models: Ensure both switches support stacking and have dedicated stack ports. Some models, like Huawei S1700, do not support stacking .
  2. Use High-Rate Ports for Stack Traffic: When forwarding traffic through stack cables, use high-speed ports to maintain performance .
  3. Topology Considerations: Prefer ring topology for reliability, as it provides redundancy in case of a link failure. Chain topology is also possible but less resilient .
  4. Distance Management: For optical modules, ensure the fiber jumper length matches the physical distance between switches. For distances exceeding 30 meters, optical modules with fiber jumpers are preferred over DAC or AOC .
  5. Software and Configuration: All switches in the stack should run the same software version and feature set. Assign stack priorities to determine the master switch, and power up switches in sequence to ensure proper role election .

Summary

For stacking switches with optical modules:

  • Short distances (<7 m): DAC cables
  • Medium distances (7–30 m): AOC cables
  • Long distances (>30 m): Optical modules with fiber jumpers Following these guidelines ensures high-speed, reliable stack connections, simplifies management, and allows for easy maintenance and module replacement when needed .
