1. Permanent Connection (Fusion Splicing)

Permanent connections, also called hot melt or fusion splicing, involve using an electric arc to melt and fuse the ends of two optical fibers together. This method is ideal for long-distance or semi-permanent connections because it provides the lowest signal attenuation, typically 0.01–0.03 dB per point. Fusion splicing requires specialized equipment (fusion splicer) and professional operation, and the splice point must be protected in a special container to maintain durability and performance .

2. Emergency Connection (Cold Splicing)

Emergency or cold splicing uses mechanical and chemical methods to align and bond fiber ends. It is quick and reliable for temporary or emergency use, with typical attenuation of 0.1–0.3 dB per point. Mechanical cold splicing involves placing the fiber ends in a sleeve and clamping them. While convenient, these connections are less stable over time and are not recommended for permanent installations .

3. Active Connection (Connector-Based)

Active connections use fiber optic connectors (plugs and sockets) to link fibers site-to-site or site-to-cable. This method is flexible, simple, and convenient, commonly used in building networks. Typical attenuation is around 1 dB per connector, and while connectors may lose 10–20% of light, they allow easy reconfiguration and maintenance. Common connector types include LC, SC, and ST, chosen based on compatibility with network equipment .

4. Series Connection Considerations

When connecting optical cables in series, it is important to consider:

  • Signal Loss: Each connection introduces some attenuation; fusion splicing minimizes this, while connectors and cold splices have higher losses .
  • Cable Type: Single-mode fibers are preferred for long-distance series connections due to lower loss, while multi-mode fibers are suitable for shorter distances .
  • Testing: Use OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) or visual fault locators to check for breaks, misalignment, or excessive attenuation at each connection point .
  • Physical Protection: Ensure proper cable handling, bend radius, and protective enclosures to prevent mechanical damage during installation .

5. Practical Tips

  • Maintain clean connectors to prevent dust contamination.
  • Avoid sharp bends and excessive pulling during installation.
  • Use figure-8 loops when storing or deploying cable to prevent twisting and stress.
  • Schedule regular inspections to ensure long-term network reliability . By selecting the appropriate connection method and following proper installation and testing procedures, optical cables can be reliably connected in series to extend network reach while maintaining high performance.
