Overview of Distribution Boxes

A distribution box (also called a distribution board, panel board, or breaker panel) is the central hub for electrical power in a building. It divides incoming power into subsidiary circuits and provides protection via fuses or circuit breakers. Typical components include bus bars, switches, residual current devices (RCDs), and terminal blocks. Panels can be main breaker panels, main lug panels, sub-panels, or transfer switches, depending on the application and load distribution requirements .

International Standards (IEC)

The IEC 61439 series governs low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, specifying design, construction, and testing requirements. Key points include :

  • Design Verification: Panels must undergo tests to ensure they withstand electrical stress and environmental conditions.

  • Mounting Height: Residential panels are typically mounted between 1 m and 1.8 m from the floor; 1.3 m is recommended for elderly or handicapped users.
  • Industrial Panels: Panels with IP54 protection require a mounting area up to 1.5 m wide, 1.2 m high, and 0.5 m deep.
  • Clearance: Adequate working space must be provided around panels for safe access.
  • Switchgear Installation: Outdoor installation is preferred unless the panel is rated for indoor use with at least IP4X protection.

US Standards (NEC)

The National Electrical Code (NEC) 2023 specifies safety and installation requirements for panelboards and load centers :

  • Working Space: Minimum clearance of 30 inches wide, 36 inches deep, and 6.5 feet high in front of the panel.
  • Mounting Height: Panels should not exceed 6 ft 7 in (2 m) above the floor.
  • Dedicated Space: A clear area from the floor to 1.8 m is required for safe operation.
  • Wireway Depth: Maximum 6 inches beyond the front of the panel; trough depth 12 inches; switchboard depth 24 inches.
  • Obstructions: No storage or equipment should block the panel's working space.

Additional Design Considerations

  • IP Ratings: Panels must have appropriate ingress protection (e.g., IP54 for industrial, IP65 for outdoor solar installations).
  • Material Quality: Corrosion-resistant materials and adequate internal cable space are essential for durability .
  • Circuit Protection: Panels should include MCBs, RCBs, or fuse banks to protect individual circuits.
  • Sub-Panels: Used to distribute power to specific zones; isolation occurs upstream at the main panel .
