A landscape power distribution box receives low-voltage power from a transformer and safely distributes it to multiple outdoor lighting fixtures.

How It Works

A landscape lighting transformer converts standard household voltage (typically 120V) into a safer low voltage, usually 12–15 volts AC, suitable for outdoor lighting . The primary side of the transformer connects to your home's electrical supply, either via a GFCI-protected outlet or a hardwired connection inside a weatherproof compartment . The secondary side outputs low-voltage power to the landscape lighting system. The distribution box (or low-voltage junction box) acts as a central hub, allowing multiple fixtures to connect to the transformer efficiently. It typically features multiple terminals or taps, enabling you to adjust voltage for longer wire runs and compensate for voltage drop . Common designs, like a 10-way junction box, allow up to 10 fixtures to be connected, with tool-free clamps for easy installation and maintenance .

Wiring and Installation

  1. Transformer to Distribution Box: Connect the low-voltage wires from the transformer's secondary terminals to the input terminals of the distribution box. Ensure correct polarity if the fixtures require it, usually with one wire as common negative and the other as positive .
  2. Distribution Box to Fixtures: Run low-voltage wires from each terminal in the box to individual lights. Use appropriate wire gauge (9–21 AWG) depending on the total wattage and distance to minimize voltage drop .
  3. Weatherproofing: The distribution box should be rated for outdoor use (IP65 or similar) and installed in a location protected from water ingress. Many boxes include a removable lid and a riser to prevent moisture from entering .
  4. Safety Considerations: Ensure the transformer is mounted above ground, near a GFCI outlet, and away from water sources. For hardwired transformers, secure all connections inside a weatherproof junction box and use strain relief connectors to prevent loosening .

Benefits

  • Centralized control of multiple fixtures
  • Simplifies adding or removing lights
  • Reduces voltage drop by allowing voltage adjustment
  • Protects connections from weather and corrosion By connecting a transformer to a properly rated landscape power distribution box, you create a safe, efficient, and flexible low-voltage lighting system for your outdoor spaces .
