Traditional Fiber Optic Cores

In standard optical fibers, the core is a solid cylinder of ultra-pure glass or plastic that guides light signals along the fiber's length . The core is surrounded by a cladding with a slightly lower refractive index, which traps light inside the core through total internal reflection. The core is never empty in these fibers; it is the medium through which light travels, and its diameter varies depending on whether the fiber is single-mode (around 8–10 microns) or multimode (50–62.5 microns), .

Hollow-Core Fibers

Hollow-core fibers (HCF) are a newer type of optical fiber where the core is mostly empty, filled only with air or an inert gas . The empty core allows light to travel faster—up to about 50% faster than in solid glass—because the refractive index of gas is lower than that of glass . Hollow-core fibers also reduce signal attenuation, making them ideal for high-performance computing, data center interconnections, and low-latency applications . Major manufacturers like Corning, Prysmian, and Lightera have been developing and producing HCF, and specialized equipment now exists for splicing and testing these fibers .
