IEEE 802.3 Working Group

The IEEE 802.3 Working Group is the primary organization responsible for defining Ethernet standards, including optical modules used in LAN, MAN, and WAN networks. It develops specifications for the physical layer (PHY) and data link layer, covering both copper and optical fiber connections. IEEE 802.3 standards define the electrical and optical interfaces, signaling rates, and management parameters for Ethernet transceivers, including single-mode and multimode optical modules supporting speeds from 100 Mb/s to 1.6 Tb/s .
