Preparation

  1. Inspect and Prepare the Cable: Before coiling, remove the outer jacket and any protective layers carefully to expose the fibers without damaging them. Ensure all fibers are clean and free of debris using alcohol and a dust-free cloth .
  2. Splice and Protect Fibers: If splicing is required, insert fiber protection sleeves over the spliced sections to safeguard the joints . Ensure splices are successful, as failed splices can lead to uneven fiber lengths and complicate coiling .

Coiling Method

  1. Determine Reserved Length: Calculate the required slack for each fiber to allow for future maintenance and avoid tension. Typically, the bending radius should be at least 10 times the cable diameter and not less than 30 mm .
  2. Coil in the Tray:
    • Middle First, Then Sides: Place the heat-shrink sleeves or spliced fibers in the center of the tray first, then coil the remaining fibers on both sides. This method protects splices and is ideal for limited tray space .
    • Start from One End: Alternatively, coil fibers from one end, fix the protective sleeve, and then coil the remaining fibers. This is faster and flexible for varying fiber lengths .
  3. Routing Direction: Route internal pigtails counterclockwise and external fibers clockwise along the splice tray slots. Avoid pulling fibers tightly; let them follow the natural curve .

Special Considerations

  • Avoid Sharp Bends: Never bend fibers below the minimum radius to prevent microbending or breakage .
  • Separate Long or Short Fibers: If individual fibers are unusually long or short, coil them separately at the tray ends .
