Page Content

A CPO optical module is not a single chip; it is an integrated assembly of optical and electronic components co-packaged with a switching ASIC.

What a CPO Optical Module Is

A CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) optical module combines multiple photonic components—such as lasers, modulators, and photodetectors—with electronic drivers and transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) into a single tightly integrated package that sits directly alongside or on the same substrate as a switching or routing ASIC . Unlike a conventional pluggable optical transceiver, which is a discrete, hot-swappable unit, a CPO module is designed for co-location with the ASIC, dramatically shortening the electrical signal paths and improving bandwidth, latency, and power efficiency .

Why It's Not a Chip

While a chip typically refers to a single semiconductor die performing a specific function, a CPO module is a heterogeneous assembly. It includes multiple chips (ASICs, driver ICs, and photonic dies) and optical elements packaged together on a substrate or interposer. This integration allows the module to function as a high-speed optical engine but does not make it a single semiconductor device .

Key Features of CPO Modules

  • Integrated optics and electronics: Combines lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and electronic drivers in one package .
  • Co-packaged with ASICs: Placed on the same substrate or interposer as the switch chip for minimal signal path length .
  • High performance: Reduces latency, lowers power consumption, and increases bandwidth compared to traditional pluggable modules .
  • Complex assembly: Requires advanced packaging techniques like 2.5D/3D integration and silicon photonics .

Summary

In short, a CPO optical module is an integrated system rather than a single chip. It merges multiple photonic and electronic components with a switch ASIC to create a compact, high-performance optical engine for data centers and high-performance computing environments .
