What CWDM Is

CWDM is a fiber-optic technology that combines multiple optical signals, each at a distinct wavelength, onto a single fiber. The term "coarse" refers to its wider wavelength spacing, typically 20 nanometers, compared to Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), which has much narrower spacing (0.4–1.6 nm) . CWDM modules are designed to work with this technology, enabling multiple data streams—such as voice, video, and data—to travel simultaneously without interference .

How CWDM Optical Modules Work

A CWDM optical module functions as part of a multiplexer/demultiplexer system:

  1. Transmission: Multiple data sources send signals at different wavelengths. A multiplexer (MUX) in the module combines these signals onto a single fiber .
  2. Propagation: The combined wavelengths travel through the fiber independently, without interfering with each other .
  3. Reception: At the receiving end, a demultiplexer (DEMUX) separates the wavelengths, directing each signal to its corresponding receiver . CWDM modules typically support up to 18 channels spanning the 1270–1610 nm spectrum, covering the O, E, S, C, and L fiber bands . Because of the wider spacing, CWDM modules are simpler and more cost-effective than DWDM modules, which require precise lasers and additional wavelength management .
