The standard 12-core fiber optic splicing sequence follows the TIA/EIA-598-C color code: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, and Aqua.

Standard 12-Fiber Color Sequence

For a 12-core optical cable, each fiber is color-coded to ensure proper identification during splicing. The sequence is:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue) This sequence is repeated for higher fiber counts or multiple tubes in loose-tube cables, with each tube also color-coded for identification .

Splicing Procedure

When splicing a 12-core cable:

  1. Prepare the fibers: Strip the outer jacket and buffer coating carefully to expose the bare fibers. Clean each fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove debris.
  2. Identify fibers: Match fibers according to the standard color sequence to ensure continuity. For multi-tube cables, identify the tube color first, then the fiber color within the tube .
  3. Choose splicing method:
    • Fusion splicing: Align fibers in a fusion splicer and use an electric arc to weld the fibers together. This method provides low insertion loss (~0.1 dB) and minimal back reflection.
    • Mechanical splicing: Use an alignment fixture and index-matching gel to hold fibers together. This is faster but slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB) and is often used for temporary connections .
  4. Sequence alignment: Splice fibers in the order of the 12-color sequence to maintain proper mapping from one cable end to the other.
  5. Protect the splice: Use a splice sleeve or heat-shrink tube to protect the joint from mechanical stress and environmental factors.

Best Practices

  • Always verify fiber identification before splicing to prevent misalignment.
  • Maintain a clean work environment to avoid contamination.
  • Document the fiber sequence and splice locations for future maintenance.
  • For high-count cables, use the tube and fiber system: identify the tube color first, then the fiber color within the tube, following the 12-color sequence . Following this sequence ensures proper connectivity, minimal signal loss, and compliance with industry standards.
