A short-board optical module is a compact optical transceiver that converts electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa, designed for short-reach high-speed data transmission.

Overview

Short-board optical modules are used in optical fiber communication systems to enable high-speed data transfer over short distances, typically up to 300 meters using multimode fiber . They integrate a Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), which emits light via a laser diode or VCSEL, and a Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA), which detects incoming optical signals . These modules perform optoelectronic conversion, bridging the host system (switch, router, or server) and the optical network.

PCB and Internal Design

The optical module PCB is the core of the module, acting as the interface between the optical components and the host system . Key design considerations include:

  • Miniaturization: Short-board modules use high-density interconnect (HDI) techniques, stacked microvias, and fine line/space features to fit within constrained form factors like SFP or QSFP .
  • Gold finger design: Power pins are longer than data pins to ensure safe power sequencing, and inner layers near the plug often have no copper to reduce impedance mismatch and suppress electrostatic discharge .

Short-board optical modules are ideal for short-reach applications in data centers, server interconnects, and high-speed computing environments. They support multiple protocols and data rates, such as 25Gbps Ethernet, CPRI, Fibre Channel, and PCIe . Their compact design allows integration into 1U or 2U server PCBs without mechanical interference .
