To connect a circuit breaker box to a distribution box, run a properly rated cable from the main breaker to the distribution box, connect the phase, neutral, and ground wires correctly, and then distribute power to individual circuits using appropriately rated breakers.

Step 1: Prepare the Main Panel

Ensure the main breaker box is properly installed and grounded. The incoming supply wires (two hot wires for split-phase 240V or one hot for single-phase 120V, plus neutral and ground) should be securely connected to the main breaker and busbars. The neutral busbar should be bonded to the grounding bar for safety .

Step 2: Run the Feed Cable to the Distribution Box

Use a dedicated cable rated for the load to connect the main panel to the distribution box. The wire gauge must match the amperage of the main breaker to prevent overheating. Typically, a 2-pole MCB in the main panel feeds the distribution box for single-phase systems .

Step 3: Connect Wires in the Distribution Box

  • Main MCB: Connect the incoming phase (hot) and neutral wires to the main MCB in the distribution box. This MCB acts as the main switch for the DB .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Install an RCCB for additional protection against leakage currents. Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB.
  • Branch MCBs: Connect each branch circuit to individual MCBs. Single-pole MCBs are used for lighting and outlets, while double-pole MCBs are used for high-power appliances .

Step 4: Wire Color and Arrangement

  • Phase wires: Typically red, yellow, or green depending on the phase.
  • Neutral wire: Blue (or white in some regions).
  • Ground wire: Green or bare copper.
  • Arrange breakers from left to right, with reserved positions on the right side. Bind wires neatly with plastic ties and mark voltage levels clearly .

Step 5: Safety Checks

  • Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
  • Verify that the neutral and ground are separate in the distribution box to prevent hazards .
  • Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage and grounding before switching on the main breaker.
  • Conduct a final inspection to ensure no short circuits, overloads, or loose connections .

Step 6: Power Distribution

Once the main MCB and RCCB are connected, turning on the main switch will supply power to all branch circuits. Each branch MCB will then control its respective load, such as lighting, outlets, or appliances . By following these steps, you can safely and efficiently connect a circuit breaker box to a distribution box while ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards.
