Fiber‑optic cables are primarily made from ultra‑pure silica glass (SiO₂) doped with elements like germanium, surrounded by silica cladding, UV‑cured acrylate coatings, polymer buffer tubes (PBT/PP), aramid or FRP strength members, water‑blocking gels or dry SAP materials, and outer jackets such as PVC, PE, LSZH, or TPU.

1. Optical Fiber Materials

Core

  • Ultra‑pure silica (SiO₂) — main material for single‑mode and multimode fibers.
  • Dopants: germanium, phosphorus, boron — adjust refractive index.
  • Plastic optical fiber (POF): PMMA or polystyrene for short‑distance use.

Cladding

  • Silica with lower refractive index (often fluorine‑doped).
  • Plastic cladding for POF (silicone, fluorinated polymers).

2. Coatings & Buffer Layers

  • Primary coating: dual‑layer UV‑cured acrylate (soft + hard).
  • Color inks: UV‑cured for fiber identification.
  • Buffer materials:
    • PBT (most common for loose tubes).
    • PP (better low‑temperature toughness, hydrolysis resistance).

3. Strength Members

  • Aramid yarn (Kevlar) — tensile strength.
  • FRP rods — non‑metallic reinforcement.
  • Steel wires/tapes — for armored cables.
  • Basalt fiber, ceramic rods — extreme environments.

4. Water‑Blocking Materials

  • Dry SAP‑coated yarns/fabrics — swell to block water.
  • Thixotropic gels — moisture protection in loose tubes.

5. Armoring

  • Metal armor: steel tape, stainless mesh, copper‑clad aluminum.
  • Non‑metal armor: aramid yarns, fiberglass.

6. Outer Jacket Materials

  • PE (Polyethylene): outdoor durability.
  • PVC: general indoor use.
  • LSZH: low‑smoke, halogen‑free for safety‑critical environments.
  • TPU/PUR: high flexibility, abrasion resistance.

Fiber‑optic cable performance depends on selecting the right combination of these materials for the intended environment and application.
