Fiber optic sensing works by detecting changes in light properties within an optical fiber, which are caused by physical effects such as strain, temperature, or vibration, and converting these changes into measurable signals.

Basic Principle

Fiber optic sensors use optical fibers as the sensing element or as a medium to relay signals from a remote sensor to a detector. Light traveling through the fiber is affected by external physical conditions. These changes can modulate the intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time of the light, which is then measured by a detector to determine the corresponding physical quantity ( ).

Types of Fiber Optic Sensing

  1. Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensor, with light directly modulated by environmental changes along its length.
  2. Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from a separate sensing element, which interacts with the environment ( ).

Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing

Distributed fiber optic sensing allows the fiber to act as a continuous sensor along its entire length, creating thousands of sensing points. Technologies include:

  • Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS): Measures temperature changes along the fiber.
  • Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): Detects vibrations or acoustic signals.
  • Distributed Temperature and Strain Sensing (DTSS): Monitors both temperature and mechanical strain ( ). These systems use an opto-electronic interrogator to inject laser light into the fiber and detect backscattered light. Changes in backscattering, caused by vibration, strain, or temperature, indicate the location and magnitude of the event ( ).

How the Detection Works

Fiber optic sensing relies on backscattering phenomena such as Rayleigh, Brillouin, or Raman scattering. When the fiber experiences a physical change:

  • Strain or pressure alters the fiber's geometry, affecting light phase or wavelength.
  • Temperature changes modify the refractive index, shifting the light signal.
  • Vibrations create transient changes in light intensity or phase. Specialized structures like Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) can reflect specific wavelengths of light, which shift in response to strain or temperature, allowing precise measurement ( ).

Applications

Fiber optic sensing is widely used for:

  • Structural health monitoring of bridges, pipelines, and buildings.
  • Security and surveillance, including border monitoring and intrusion detection.
  • Environmental monitoring, such as detecting seismic activity or temperature changes in power cables.
  • Industrial applications, including oil, gas, and geothermal energy monitoring ( ). Fiber optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, do not conduct electricity, and can operate in harsh environments, making them ideal for high-voltage or flammable areas ( ).

Summary

In essence, fiber optic sensing converts physical changes along an optical fiber into measurable optical signals, enabling real-time, distributed monitoring over long distances with high precision. This technology is versatile, scalable, and increasingly used in critical infrastructure and industrial applications.

Optical fibers can be used as sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure and other quantities by modifying a fiber so that the quantity to be measured modulates the intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength or transit time of light in the fiber. Sensors that vary the intensity of light are the simplest, since only a simple source and detector are required. A particularly useful feature of intrinsic fiber-optic sensors is that they can, if required, provide distributed sensing over very large distances.
