Page Content

To connect an optical splitter to a fiber distribution box, install the splitter inside the box, route and splice the fibers carefully, and secure all connections while maintaining proper bend radius and protection.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Distribution Box

Select a suitable fiber distribution box (also called an optical distribution box or ODB) that accommodates your splitter type and port density. Ensure the box is mounted securely on a wall, pole, or underground enclosure, following the manufacturer's installation dimensions and using expansion screws or brackets as needed . The box should provide strain relief, bend radius control, and environmental protection for long-term reliability .

Step 2: Gather Tools and Materials

You will need:

  • Fiber optic cables and connectors
  • Optical splitter (PLC or FBT type)
  • Fiber stripping tools and cleaning supplies
  • Fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit
  • Splice protectors
  • Screwdrivers, wrenches, and cable ties

Step 3: Prepare the Fibers

Measure and cut the fiber optic cables to the required lengths. Strip the protective jacket carefully to expose the inner fibers, then clean the fiber ends using a fiber cleaning tool to remove dust or debris . Proper cleaning is crucial to prevent signal loss.

Step 4: Install the Splitter

Place the optical splitter inside the designated tray or compartment within the distribution box. Identify the input port (single feeder fiber) and output ports (multiple distribution fibers). Secure the splitter using the provided clips or mounting points to prevent movement .

Step 5: Splice or Connect Fibers

  • Fusion Splicing: Align the fiber ends in a fusion splicer, fuse them, and protect the splice with a splice protector.
  • Mechanical Splicing: Insert the fiber ends into a mechanical splice connector and secure according to the manufacturer's instructions . Connect the spliced fibers to the corresponding input and output ports of the splitter, ensuring no tension or sharp bends in the fibers.

Step 6: Organize and Protect Fibers

Route the fibers neatly within the box, maintaining proper bend radius and using cable ties or guides to prevent stress. Ensure all splices and connections are protected from dust and mechanical damage .

Step 7: Test Connectivity

After installation, power up the network equipment and test the fiber connections using an optical power meter or OTDR. Verify that signal loss is within acceptable limits and that there are no reflections or discontinuities . Adjust connections if necessary.

Step 8: Close and Secure the Box

Once testing is complete, close the distribution box securely, ensuring it is sealed against environmental factors and ready for long-term operation . By following these steps, the optical splitter will be properly integrated into the fiber distribution box, ensuring stable performance and reliable signal distribution for FTTH or FTTx networks.
