Recommended Protection Levels

  • Installed at the service entrance or main incomer of the distribution box.

  • Provides the first barrier against lightning, protecting the main distribution system and preventing damage to downstream equipment . Secondary Protection (Type 2 SPD):
  • Installed inside the distribution box or at subpanels feeding sensitive equipment.
  • Absorbs residual surge energy not fully mitigated by the primary SPD, with discharge currents around 20–40 kA per phase and voltage protection levels of ≤2000 V.
  • Protects branch circuits and sensitive devices, ensuring normal operation of most electrical equipment . Optional Tertiary Protection (Type 3 SPD):
  • Installed at the point of use, close to critical or precision equipment.
  • Handles smaller surges (5–10 kA) and limits voltage to safe levels (≤1800 V), providing the final layer of protection for sensitive electronics .

Grounding and Installation Considerations

  • Ensure a robust grounding system with low impedance to safely divert lightning currents. Ground resistance should be tested regularly .
  • Connect the SPD's ground to the distribution box's dedicated surge protection grounding terminal, not the general power ground .
  • Use short connecting leads (≤0.5 m) to minimize voltage drop and maximize SPD effectiveness .
  • Metallic enclosures provide natural shielding, but all metallic components should be properly bonded to the grounding system .

Standards and Compliance

  • Follow IEC 62305 for lightning protection zones (LPZ) and IEC/EN 61643-11 for SPD classification .
  • Outdoor distribution boxes typically transition from LPZ 0 (external environment) to LPZ 1, requiring Type 1 SPDs at the entry and Type 2 SPDs downstream. Type 3 SPDs are used at LPZ 2→3 boundaries for sensitive loads .
