Coherent optics significantly increases network capacity by using advanced modulation formats and polarization multiplexing. By encoding multiple bits per symbol and supporting dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), coherent systems can transmit terabits of data per second over a single fiber pair, which is essential for handling the rapid growth of global internet traffic .

Longer Transmission Distances

Signal degradation due to attenuation, dispersion, and nonlinear effects limits traditional optical systems. Coherent communication leverages digital signal processing (DSP) to compensate for these impairments, allowing signals to travel much farther without the need for frequent regeneration. This makes it ideal for long-haul terrestrial networks, submarine cables, and intercontinental links .

Improved Sensitivity and Signal Quality

Coherent receivers mix the incoming signal with a local oscillator, enhancing sensitivity and enabling detection of extremely weak signals.
