A Distribution Box SPD system protects electrical equipment by strategically placing surge protection devices to divert overvoltage away from sensitive loads.

Overview of SPD Systems in Distribution Boxes

Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are installed in distribution boxes to safeguard electrical systems and connected equipment from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes, switching operations, or grid fluctuations . SPDs limit voltage spikes by diverting surge currents to ground, preventing damage to sensitive electronics and reducing fire risks .

SPD Placement and Layout

  1. Main Distribution Board (MDB): The first line of defense is placing SPDs near the main busbar. This ensures short connection paths, which improves response time and effectiveness . SPDs should be installed before residual current devices (RCDs/FI switches) to prevent unwanted tripping during surges .
  2. Sub-Distribution Boards: Sensitive equipment like computers, servers, or control panels should have secondary SPDs installed in sub-distribution boards. This cascade arrangement provides multiple layers of protection, ensuring that surges passing the main board are further mitigated .
  3. Cascade Protection: Using multiple SPDs in series from the main distribution to sub-distribution boards enhances protection. The first-level SPD handles high-energy surges, while subsequent SPDs protect sensitive downstream devices .

SPD Types and Sizing

  • Type 1 SPDs: Designed for direct lightning strikes, typically installed at the service entrance.
  • Type 2 SPDs: Common in residential and commercial distribution boxes, installed after the main breaker to handle switching surges .
  • Electrical Ratings: Proper sizing involves selecting SPDs with appropriate maximum discharge current (In), voltage protection level (Up), and nominal system voltage (Un). Undersized SPDs degrade quickly, while oversized SPDs may not clamp effectively .

Installation Tips

  • Keep connection wires short and straight to minimize impedance and improve surge response .
  • Maintain minimum distances between SPDs: at least 10 meters between voltage switching and voltage limiting SPDs, and 5 meters between two voltage limiting SPDs .
  • Test SPDs regularly (every six months) for signs of wear, such as burned connectors or tripped indicators .

Specialized Applications

For photovoltaic systems, dedicated SPD distribution boxes like the SPD-PV-21 provide pre-wired surge protection for solar arrays. These include Type 2 SPDs and fuse disconnectors, ensuring quick installation and IP65-rated protection .

Key Benefits

  • Protects sensitive electronics and data from overvoltage.
  • Reduces risk of electrical fires.
  • Extends the lifespan of electrical equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with building codes and safety standards . By following proper SPD layout, sizing, and cascade strategies, a distribution box system can effectively mitigate surge risks and maintain reliable operation of electrical installations.
