To quickly find the right optical cable, identify the cable type (singlemode or multimode), connector type (LC, SC, MPO, Toslink), and match it to the device's input/output port or fiber color code.

Identify the Cable Type

Optical cables are generally singlemode (SM) or multimode (MM). Singlemode cables support higher bandwidth and longer distances, typically over 500 meters, and are used for long-distance data transmission. Multimode cables have a larger core, are less expensive, and are suitable for shorter distances, often in data centers or home networks . For audio or home entertainment, Toslink or Mini Toslink cables are common, while fiber-optic HDMI cables can carry both audio and video .

Determine the Connector Type

Common optical connectors include LC, SC, ST, MPO, and Toslink. LC and MPO connectors are widely used in high-speed networks, while Toslink is standard for digital audio connections . Connectors may also have different polish types: PC, UPC, or APC, with APC offering better return loss and reduced reflection for high-bandwidth applications .

Use Color Codes for Fiber Identification

For multi-fiber cables, the TIA-598-C color code helps quickly identify individual fibers. Each fiber is assigned a color in a 12-fiber sequence, repeated for higher-count cables with stripes for uniqueness. For example, fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable is the Violet fiber in the Green tube . Match to Device Ports

Locate the optical input/output port on your device, labeled as “Optical,” “Digital Out (Optical),” or “Toslink.” Insert the corresponding cable firmly into the port. For audio receivers, TVs, or gaming consoles, ensure the device is set to the correct input source to receive the signal .
