Core Principle: Total Internal Reflection

Each fiber consists of a core (made of glass or plastic) surrounded by a cladding with a lower refractive index. When light traveling in the core hits the boundary with the cladding at a shallow angle above the critical angle, it reflects back into the core, allowing the light to travel long distances with minimal signal loss .

Structure of Fiber Optic Cables

  2. Cladding: Surrounds the core and traps light within it through reflection, maintaining signal integrity .
