A cold splice is a mechanical fiber optic connection that joins two fibers without fusion splicing, ideal for FTTH home drop installations.

What is a Cold Splice?

A cold splice uses a mechanical connector to align and secure two fiber optic cables without the need for heat or fusion equipment. The connector typically consists of a ferrule that holds the fiber in precise alignment and a body that secures the ferrule, ensuring stable optical performance and low insertion loss . This method is particularly useful for field installations where fusion splicing is impractical or costly.

Suitable Connectors

For home drop applications, SC/UPC cold splice connectors are commonly used. These connectors are designed for fast, reliable field termination of FTTH drop cables, including flat or embedded cables. The installation process involves:

  1. Preparing the cable: Strip and clean the fiber jackets to remove protective layers and debris.
  2. Cleave the fiber: Ensure a clean, precise cut for optimal alignment.
  3. Insert into the cold splice module: Align the fiber within the mechanical splice element.
  4. Lock the connector assembly: Secure the fiber inside the SC/UPC housing for stable performance . These connectors provide low insertion loss, stable signal performance, and simple assembly, making them ideal for subscriber terminals, optical distribution boxes, and indoor/outdoor FTTH deployments .

Fiber Splice Closures

When deploying cold splices outdoors or in a home drop network, fiber splice closures protect the spliced fibers from environmental factors. Options include:

  • Dome closures: Compact, IP68-rated units suitable for pole, strand, or below-grade installations, accommodating up to 144 fibers .
  • Drop closures: Designed for frequent re-entry, allowing easy access to subscriber drop cables while maintaining protection .
  • Aerial closures: Free-breathing units for mid-span or drop splicing, ideal for outside plant or FTTH aerial deployments . These closures often include internal adapters or trays to organize mechanical splices and pre-terminated drop cables, ensuring a neat and reliable installation .
