Cross-cut splicing is the process of rejoining two fiber optic cables that have been severed. The goal is to minimize optical loss and back reflection while maintaining mechanical strength and long-term reliability .

Splicing Methods

There are two primary methods for splicing optical fibers: 1. Fusion Splicing

  • Process: Uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the ends of two fibers into a single continuous fiber.
  • Advantages: Produces the lowest optical loss (typically <0.1 dB) and nearly zero back reflection, making it ideal for high-performance networks .
  • Steps:
    1. Strip the fiber coating to expose the bare glass.
    2. Clean the fiber with alcohol to remove dust and oils.
    3. Cleave the fiber ends to create flat, mirror-like surfaces.
    4. Align the fibers precisely using a fusion splicer with high-resolution cameras.
