Impedance relays, also known as distance relays, are protective devices that detect faults on power lines by measuring the electrical impedance between the relay location and the fault.

Definition and Purpose

An impedance relay is a type of protective relay that operates based on the ratio of voltage to current in a circuit, which corresponds to the electrical impedance of the line section being monitored. These relays are primarily used to protect transmission lines by detecting faults within a predetermined distance from the relay location, ensuring system stability and safety .

Working Principle

The operation of an impedance relay relies on the balance between two torques:

  • Operating torque: Generated by the current element, proportional to the line current.
  • Restraining torque: Generated by the voltage element, proportional to the line voltage. Under normal conditions, the restraining torque exceeds the operating torque, keeping the relay inactive. During a fault, the current increases and voltage drops, reducing the impedance (V/I ratio). When this ratio falls below a preset threshold, the relay activates and sends a trip signal to the circuit breaker .

Fault Detection Mechanism

Impedance relays measure the magnitude and angle of impedance for each fault loop, including phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground faults. The relay compares the measured impedance with the known line impedance. If the measured impedance is smaller, it indicates a fault within the protected zone, and the relay triggers the breaker to isolate the fault .

Types of Impedance Relays

  1. Definite Distance Relay: Operates when the fault impedance falls below a fixed value, corresponding to a specific distance along the line.
  2. Time-Distance Relay: Adjusts the operating time based on the fault location, providing faster tripping for closer faults and slower tripping for distant faults .

Applications

Impedance relays are widely used in medium and high-voltage transmission lines for:

  • Phase fault protection
  • Distance protection
  • Loss of synchronism or excitation protection
  • Fault location and system stability monitoring They are versatile and can handle complex transient conditions, making them essential for modern power system protection schemes .
