An optical power meter does not inherently require an external light source to measure absolute optical power, but it does need one when measuring optical loss across a fiber link.

Measuring Absolute Optical Power

An optical power meter (OPM) can measure the power of an existing optical signal directly, such as the output from a laser or active network device. In this case, the OPM's photodiode sensor converts incoming light into an electrical signal, which is displayed in units like dBm or watts. No additional light source is needed because the device is detecting light already present in the system .

Measuring Optical Loss

When the goal is to measure the loss of a fiber optic link, an external light source is required. The light source, often a laser or LED, is connected to one end of the fiber, while the OPM is connected to the other end. The OPM measures the received power, and by comparing it to the known output of the light source, the optical loss of the fiber can be calculated. This setup is commonly referred to as an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS), .
